Funktion-One RES 4D – Downfill Horn-Loaded Loudspeaker (Resolution Touring System)

The Funktion-One RES 4D is a precision-engineered horn-loaded downfill loudspeaker designed to complete large-scale Resolution system deployments by delivering accurate near-field coverage and seamless tonal integration with main array elements.

In professional touring environments, one of the most common challenges is maintaining consistent sound coverage from the front row to the back of the audience. While main loudspeakers such as RES 4 or RES 5 provide long-throw projection, they often leave a coverage gap directly below the array. The RES 4D is specifically developed to solve this problem.

Rather than acting as a standalone full-range cabinet, the RES 4D functions as a targeted mid/high extension module, ensuring that every listener—especially those closest to the stage—experiences the same clarity, balance, and energy as the rest of the audience.

System Role & Application

System Type: Horn-loaded downfill loudspeaker
Primary Function: Near-field coverage and vertical array completion

Core Purpose in System Design

Extends coverage into front-of-stage audience zones
Completes vertical dispersion of flown systems
Maintains tonal consistency across the entire listening area
Eliminates “dead zones” directly beneath main arrays

Why Downfill Matters (Real-World Insight)

In real deployments:

Front-row listeners often receive reduced high-frequency content
Main cabinets overshoot near-field zones due to projection angle
Coverage becomes uneven without dedicated downfill

The RES 4D addresses this by filling the last critical coverage gap, ensuring uniform sound pressure and tonal balance from front to back.

Key Specifications

Configuration: 2-way horn-loaded mid/high loudspeaker

~108–109 dB (high-efficiency horn design)

Power Handling (AES):

MF: ~200 W
HF: ~50 W

Nominal Impedance:

16 Ω per section

Physical & Mechanical Details

25° horizontal × 50° vertical

Connectors:

EP6 panel with captive cable

Rigging System:

Integrated flying hardware
Designed for direct attachment to Resolution arrays
Load-rated for professional touring use

Key Features & Configuration

Fully Horn-Loaded Mid/High Section:
The RES 4D uses horn loading for both MF and HF bands, delivering:

High efficiency output
Strong projection even at lower power levels
Minimal distortion at high SPL

Wide Vertical Coverage (50°):
Unlike main array elements with narrower vertical dispersion, the RES 4D provides:

Extended vertical spread toward the front audience
Smooth transition between coverage zones
Even distribution of mid and high frequencies

Focused Horizontal Dispersion (25°):
The narrower horizontal pattern ensures:

Controlled sound placement
Reduced spill onto stage or walls
Increased clarity in targeted zones

Compact Downfill Geometry:
The cabinet’s shape allows:

Close coupling with main speakers
Consistent wavefront alignment
Clean visual integration in flown systems

Acoustic Performance & System Behavior

The RES 4D is optimized for clarity, precision, and integration rather than full-range output.

Performance Characteristics

High intelligibility for speech and vocals
Smooth tonal blending with main system
Controlled dispersion with minimal overlap

Field Insight (Real Deployment)

In large touring setups:

The difference between systems with and without downfill is immediately noticeable
Front rows gain clarity, brightness, and presence
Overall system feels more “complete” and balanced

Without proper downfill:

Front audience zones often sound dull or uneven
Engineers compensate with EQ, which affects the entire system

With RES 4D:

Coverage is corrected acoustically, not electronically

System Integration

The RES 4D is designed to integrate seamlessly within Funktion-One Resolution systems.

Compatible System Components

RES 5 / RES 4 main loudspeakers
Funktion-One bass systems (F118, F218, BR series)
External amplifiers (MC², Funktion-One)
External crossovers (XO2, XO4, digital DSP)

Typical System Configuration

Main array: RES 4 or RES 5
Downfill: 1–2 × RES 4D per array
Subwoofers: 2–8 units depending on system size
External amplification and processing

Deployment Strategy

Flown Array Integration:
Mounted at the bottom of the array to cover near-field zones.

Cluster Systems:
Used in point source clusters to extend vertical coverage.

Result

Seamless front-to-back coverage
Balanced tonal response across audience
Improved system coherence and listener experience

Ideal Applications

Large-scale touring productions
Festivals and outdoor events
Concert venues and arenas
Fixed installations with flown systems
High-end club systems requiring precision coverage

System Advantages in Practice

Coverage Precision:
Ensures consistent sound in front-row and near-field areas.

Efficiency:
High sensitivity reduces amplifier requirements.

Integration:
Designed specifically for Resolution touring systems.

Control:
Directional dispersion improves clarity and reduces reflections.

Summary

The Funktion-One RES 4D is a specialized horn-loaded downfill loudspeaker engineered to complete professional touring systems by delivering precise near-field coverage and maintaining consistent sound across the entire audience.

Bottom Line

For professional audio systems in Europe, the RES 4D is a critical component for achieving full system coverage, ensuring that no part of the audience is left without clarity, presence, and impact, especially in high-end touring and installation environments.
